Ratan Tata News Article - The Idea of Power

Ratan Tata, the soft-spoken man of steel - Hindustan Times — January 31, 2007

"His grit and determination are best epitomised in what he said in an interview. "I am unfortunately a person, who has often said: You put a gun to my head and pull the trigger or take the gun away, I won't move my head." That is a rare insight into a man who protects his privacy, integrity and patriotism in equal measures."

Man Of Steel The Economic Times — December 17, 2004

"Today, the 100-year-old group is larger and stronger than it was ever before. It took on the might of the multinational automobile manufacturers by launching the country's first indigenously-made car — it operates one of the lowest-cost steel factories in the world and the largest private sector power utility company in the country and owns the largest integrated tea operation in the world."

It is amusing that the courageous Mr. Ratan Tata could not see the gun pointed at the farmers head to forcibly take their land and livelihood away from them. They too bravely did not move their head but snatched the gun and pointed it the other way and all the influence power, and money of a rich industrialist came to naught.

The 'nano' is not a favour to the country nor is it a philanthrophic effort. Mr. Tata is exploiting an emerging market that demands such an item. We all know who will profit from the sales. So why use the might of the government to forcibly acquire the asset from hapless farmers? Why not bid for it on an open market?

When will the mighty of our land learn to extend the courtsey of the free market and level playing field policies that they ask for themselves to others. This may be one way to cleanse the country of corruption in land deals.
